Cat flea infestation
According to experts
there are more than 20,000 varieties of fleas
and the most common domestic flea is Cat Flea.
Their primary host is a cat but they can be
found on dogs as well. Adult fleas don’t
leave their host’s body as they need
fresh blood supply regularly for their reproduction.
It is very obvious that you won’t be
able to detect cat flea infestation unless
you can observe some changes the way your
pet behaves. Cat flea bites have an effect
on the pet’s health as they cause skin
irritation and scratches. If this is not noticed
at right time it may swell in to a bigger
problem of skin dermatitis which can cause
fur loss and blood loss. Due to blood loss
pets may suffer from anemia. Cat fleas are
carriers of numerous other infections and
diseases like plague and typhus. It also acts
as an intermediary host to the dog tapeworm
which gets injected in to the host’s
body.
There are many methods to control flees and
prevent them from occurring again. The tried
and tested ways to get rid of fleas are sprays,
dips and flea powders. But flea collars can
also work to eradicate fleas when used with
sprays, dips and powders. Experts also refer
spot treatment in which medicated substance
is controlled via a liquid form to the cat’s
shoulder. These products are easily available
in the market under various brand names but
don’t forget to consult your veterinarian
before using such products. Flea combs are
also useful for removing fleas from pets.
Flea powders and insect growth regulators
can also be sprayed on the pet. Veterinarians
also refer oral suspension for the pets which
can be given after diluting in pet food which
kill the eggs hatched. Monthly cat flea treatments
can be taken for the pets so that fleas are
removed completely.
Then thorough cleaning of the house with a
vacuum cleaner is must for removing fleas.
IGRs should be sprayed and places frequented
by the pets should be washed as water kills
fleas. Yards and lawn should be trimmed regularly
and kept clean. If you are able to detect
flea infestation at an early stage then it
can be controlled from infecting you and your
pet. Make sure to repeat the treatment after
regular interval of time to prevent infestation
from reoccurring.
